In a pioneering move towards a circular economy, Norway's State Roads Authority (Statens vegvesen) has launched an innovative reuse project for worn-out work clothes, transforming hundreds of tons of them into high-quality furniture. This ambitious initiative converts 15-20% of collected ten tons of work clothes into new products, focusing on waste reduction and promoting sustainability. These garments, once considered waste, include oil-stained reflex trousers and scratched helmets, which are now being reborn as products like tabletops and chairs.

The project involves collaboration with key partners such as Posten, Bring, Vy, and NCC, aiming to reuse up to 50% of the materials in the future. The clothes are sorted in Norway but are currently sent to Denmark and the Netherlands for recycling, with a long-term goal of moving this process to Norway. The project has generated significant interest, with the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment encouraging more organizations to follow such examples.

The collection of worn-out work clothes began in 2023, with hundreds of tons found stored away in depots. Around ten tons have been collected so far, with 15-20% given a new life. The remainder is used as core material in furniture production. Sindre Røstad, Head of Sustainability at the State Roads Authority, states, “We believe that at least 40-50% can be reused.”

This project is part of the authority's goals to transition from a linear to a circular economy. The clothes are sorted, and any items still usable internally are retained. Current products include tabletops and chairs, with a future aim to transform the authority's sweaters into sewing thread. Additionally, there is a separate project melting down road sweepers for the production of HÅG chairs. Products made from the old clothes are sold on the commercial market through domestic and international furniture suppliers and are also used internally by the authority. While the project currently neither yields a significant profit nor loss, increased reuse in the long run will lead to lower purchasing costs for new clothes.
